Rishikesh



Rishikesh is located at a distance of 24 km from Haridwar. Rishikesh is listed amongst the sacred places in India. Rishikesh is renowned world over as a Yoga hub. Millions of tourists come here to learn Yoga every year and take part in different spiritual activities round the year. It is considered as last foothill to the Himalayas in this region. Rishikesh is home to several Ashrams and ancient temples. Rishikesh is famous for Rafting and other adventure sports. Major adventure activities take place between March and September.

Bharat Ji Temple is very famous amongst worth seeing places of Rishikesh. Bharat Ji's ancient temple is believed to have been built after a long austerity by him. Ram Janaki temple is situated on the bank of river here. Triveni Ghat is very important place where devotees come in numbers to perform Aarti every evening. Water flows through three sources of mountains and fall into the 'Kubjamrag Kund' located in front of Ram Janaki Temple, hence called Triveni Ghat. It also symbolizes three holy rivers of India namely Ganges, Yamuna and Saraswati.

Lakshman Jhula:
It is basically an iron suspension bridge, situated 4 km ahead of Rishikesh over holy river Ganges on Badrinath highway. It was made of jute ropes earlier and it is said to have been used by pilgrims to reach Badrinath. Old bridge had been washed away due to flood on 1924 and was built by the state government again on 1939. Height of the bridge is 70 ft while length is 450 ft. According to Skandpuran (Indian Mythology), to get absolved from the sin of killing demon Meghnath, Lakshman had penance at this place and created a bridge made of ropes to cross river Ganges. That is why, the land is known as Tapovan and bridge hence named Laksham Jhula.

Swarg Ashram:
Swarg Ashram is situated 1.5 km south of Laksham Jhula established by Atma Prakash Ji. Many saints have been residing in this place for long time and getting aids like food, cloths etc from the Ashrams here. One of the main attractions Geeta Bhawan established by Geeta Press Gorakhpur is also here. Paramarth Niketan, Vedan Niketan and Shankaracharya Nagar established by Maharshi Mahesh are also the major attractions of Swarg Ashram. Some prominent Ashrams in Rishikesh are mentioned below:
