is an archipelago of 572 islands in the Bay of Bengal,1200 km from the mainland.It stretches for more than 700 kms.from north to south but only 36 islands are inhabited.As on most equatorial islands, it rains for nearly 8 months of the year.Ocean breezes also ensure that, though temperatures range from 23 - 30 degrees, it is generally pleasant. The Andaman group consists of the North,Middle,south, little Andamans and Richies Archipelogo, besides many smaller islands.The Nicobar group comprises of the Great Nicobar, Little Nicobar, Car Nicobar,Nancowry, Katchal and Chowra. Port Blair on South Andaman island is the capital and entry point to the islands. Howeven,only a few of the islands are open to visitors and outsiders are not encouraged to visit the Nicobar group.

FOREIGNERS : require a permit to stay in the Islands.which can be easily obtained on arrival at Port Blair(either by air or sea) from the immigration authorities for 30 Days.In Addition, permit can also be obtained from - v

Tribal areas are out of bonuds to everyone except with special permission obtained from the Deputy Commissioner,Andaman District,Port Blair.


By Air : Port Blair is well connected with Kolkota and Chennai by air.Presently Indian flies to Port Blair from Kolkota on SunDAY,MonDAY,TuesDAY,ThursDAY & SaturDAY, and from Chennai it flies on SunDAY, MonDAY, WednesDAY & FriDAY. Jet Airways has daily flights from Chennai.

By Sea : Regular passenger ship services are available to Port Blair from Chennai, Kolkata and Vishakhapatnam and back. There are three to four sailings every month from Kolkata and Chennai to Port Blair and vice - versa. There is one sailing from Vishakhapatnam in a month. The voyage takes about 50 to 60 hours and the ship normally berths at Port Blair for about two to four Days. Further information on schedules and tariffs can be obtained from :


CELLULAR JAIL : This was where freedom fighters were incarcerated in single cells by the British and subjected to inhuman treatment.It is now a national Monument.There is a Museum and Art Gallery.

Timing : 09 to Noon & 02 to 05 Pm. Closed on WednesDays.In the Evening there is a Sound & Light Show.

This was once the centre from where the British controlled these islands.The ruind buildings are gradually being resorted by the Navy. There is also a small museum here with photographs and memorabilia of a past era.

Boats leave from Phoenix Bay Jetty at 08 : 30 am ,10 : 30 am, 12.30 pm;2 pm and 4 : 30 pm. Closed on WednesDays.

This is the highest point of the island where the forest Dept.has a rest house.There are gardens and look out view both seawards and landwards.There is a trekking route down from here. It is 55 kms by road from Port Blair but its best to take a ferry from Phoenix Bay Jetty to Bamboo Flats.

The 26 Kms drive to Chdiyatapu takes one through the countryside of the island - fields,homesteads,forests and mangroves and the beach.Two kilometers further south is Mundapahar : spectacular with giant trees, a wide beach and shallow waters ideal for paddling and swimming.

These two islands ,in the Mahatma Gndhi Marine national park, are the only ones open to visitors.Their beaches are excellent and the marine and coral undersea life can be viewed in a glass bottam boat or by snorkeling.

For water sports enthusiasts there are a number of sporting activities on offer.

This provides a panoramic view of the harbour,chatham Island.Viper Island etc.Boat leaves from Phoenix Bay Jetty at 3 pm.

This museum,now housed in a new building, is a must see for all visitors to Port Blair.

This is another interesting museum with aquariums and pictures of the marine life found in the seas around the Islands.
Timings : 9 am to 1 pm and 1.30 pm - 5 pm.closed on MonDAY and Holidays.

An excellent display of the geological and maritime history, and of the marine life found in the waters around.
Timings : 8.30 am - noon and 2 pm - 5pm.closed on WednesDAY and Holidays.
